Second album from the Colombian salsero who has chosen Paris as homeport since 1998 affirms his status as an exciting international artist. Buenaventura sings with the passion of a possessed sonero. His bolero/salsa cover of "Ne Me Quitte Pas" of Jacques Brel made this Colombian a very popular debut in France where he sells very well. Includes collaborations with Puerto Rican musicians Luis Marin (piano) Raphy Torres (trombone) Charlie Sierra (timbal and bongo) among others and also invited Papo Lucca on two tracks, Cachete Maldonado on two others with choruses by Charlie Aponte, Wichi Camacho and Jerry Rivas. Sa musique, certes, fonctionne aussi avec des recettes éprouvées, mais celles-ci doivent beaucoup au bouillant tempérament de ce chanteur généreux et de cet orchestre décoiffant qui le soutient dans l'effort. Une musique contagieuse qui dit toujours et encore que l'on n'est pas obligé de danser idiot. Preuve en est un titre comme "Estàn quemando la caña", hommage aux paysans exploités de sa Colombie ou cet autre cri de révolte, "La vida no vale nada", tiré du répertoire du Cubain Pablo Milanès. L'album regorge de reprises et d'emprunts, dont le moins surprenant n'est pas "La Chanson des jumelles", le thème de Michel Legrand tout à fait naturel dans ce traitement brûlé de soleil, et traité en latin-jazz. Au rayon des surprises, on relève l'adaptation de la superbe "Mala Vida" de Manu Chao, période Mano Negra, qui finalement trouve là des habits adaptés. Mais la plus étonnante est cette version en espagnol du "Your Song" d'Elton John, qui devient une salsa frivole baptisée "Tu canción". Avec ses cumbias ("Madre"), ses boleros ("Banano De Uraba"), ou un genre nouveau né de la rencontre avec Faudel, le salsa-raï ("Salsa Raï"), on mesure combien la salsa de Yuri Buenaventura peut faire du bien, et inventer. --José Rui
