From the rear cover: “The SYMPHONY FOR STRINGS recorded here was commissioned by the McGill Chamber Orchestra of Montreal on a grant from the Canada Council. The work was completed in September of 1960, and first performed by the McGill Chamber Orchestra under Alexander Brott the following March. […] FROM DREAMS OF BRASS the composer has supplied us with the following note; ‘The cantata was originally conceived for performance in a large hall with the orchestra divided into sections, the chorus and three loudspeakers all strategically placed to work either in groups, or opposite one another. As the central figure, the narrator ties all the elements together.
